I Love Silicone Rubber!

Yes I do! so much more than urethane! I thought I may have really screwed up and if I had been using the urethane rubber ,well..... Id have been in a real mess. I spaced and went and forgot to spray the mold release on the mule medallion before putting the rubber down.. .. woops! I was actually painting a thin layer on it so there would be no tiny air holes in the mold and I was about half way done and it popped into my head..!!* YOU FORGOT THE MOLD RELEASE!!* woops..dam! I took a deep breath and hoped it would be ok, since really, silicone will pull off most anything.. . the only reason I was worried is I was putting it on baked sculpey and I had some texture in pats of it.. so I wasnt really sure if it would stick or not.. well tonight I pulled it off and it came off like a glove.. and theres not one pin hole in the mold! in fact I think this is the cleanest mold I have ever made! you can see some of the pink rubber in the left bottom corner from the mold I cut up.

It had not started off so good either! Besides forgetting the release I didn't have quite enough rubber.. I had anticipated this some, so I took an old silicone mold that was no good and cut it into small chunks.. then I placed some of them around the sculpture. then I poured the rubber on and still I didn't have enough! rats! it was that tall mule ear! even the foals ear tip was sticking out..so.. I cut a few more chunks and stuck them in there and then waited a little and kind of pulled the rubber from the corners up over the ears into a mound.. I kept it up until the rubber was thick enough to stay. I knew this was still a problem though because it would be too thin here and I could not lay the mold flat to pour the resin in..so I got out my plasti paste shell mold mix and mixed some up today, then put a nice thick layer over the back of the rubber mold.. waited and tonight I pulled it off and its worked wonderful! I even poured a resin tonight to see how good the mold really was and I pulled an almost perfect resin! the only air hole is at the tip of the foals ear and its very small .. I'll fix it with epoxy later.. Im just so happy it turned out so good! so now.. I will start to pour more resin tomorrow ( monday that is) so anyone who wants to order needs to email me soon! I have had some orders already over the weekend and they will be shipped out this week...
this beautiful pour shown above will be one of them! Boy will she be fun to paint!

See when I pull the shell off the rubber above.see the lump on the back of the rubber there...?  I have poured uneven molds before and I had to prop stuff up under all the corners.. not for this one! Boy, I really love that plasti paste! Its so much lighter than plaster and for more complicated molds a hell of alot easier to put over rubber! .. its a 2 part mix you mix 3 to 1 and its kinda like peanut butter.. even the color is! I just spread it over the rubber.. after spraying it with mold release of course..

you can see how thick it is here.. ... each time I make a mold I learn something.. this time I learned a few tricks if I run low on rubber and I learned don't forget the mold release and use silicone in case you do forget! lol

Brilliant post!! I just love this model, and am really enjoying sharing your experiences, I'm learning with you! Congrats on a successful mold-making session, I can't wait to see a finished copy of this one, the possibilities are so exciting!

Keep up the fab work!
