if at first you dont succeed.....

Well I messed up the head on the boxer pup... and I knew it wasn't right..I just didn't know what was wrong until the client resent me some photos... I had them for when I did the boxer medallion but forgot about them.. duh... boy did they make a big difference! some people just don't get why an artist needs so many photos of all angles of what they are trying to sculpt if its a portrait .. even if its not ...to get a breed right or even to get the species right! makes a huge difference and I can never stress enough to new sculptors.. you can NEVER have enough reference photos and this is a case in point.. I usually ask for a front , side ( both ) back looking down and up and some angle shots ( and close ups for details) and I really really want them to be right on the same plane ( straight on level ) on the side shots.. especially on a horse.. if you take a photo looking down on or up to it can really make them look taller or shorter than they really are.. If possible I prefer to take my own photos but thats not always possible when the client is out of state. anyways, a lesson in reference photos and what a huge difference it can make... NOW he looks like a boxer pup...

one down.....

I just finished this dog sculpt and since I had to take photos of it for the client, and I thought Id snap one of a medallion I have had in the works since last spring.. its a bit dusty but that will be cleaned up when I get time to finish it. Im still not happy with it the head sticking out just isn't right. its too far out and doesn't have the look as the sketch I wanted... so I will mess with it until I get it just right.... and I do plan on finishing it sometimes soon... also I thought some of you may like to see the original sketch I did when I was fleshing out ideas for a new medallion..I don't always do sketches first but this time I had lots of ideas, so I did a few pages of sketches... and yes.. there were some others I think I'll be doing as well from those pages down the road.
Besides these new pieces Im still working on the last of the commissions in the studio and finally making some headway on them... but I wont rush as I always try and give my best and if im not feeling well I don't work on anything for a client. They only deserve the best I am capable of and that is part of the reason I wont be taking more commissions.. its taking me too long ( longer than what is usual for me) to get them done and I hate anyone to wait very long and don't think anyone should have to wait this long... in the future it will be sales pieces only and sometimes even unpainted pieces besides new resins sculpts.. I'll be posting photos of the pieces as I finish them.

Oh also... my aunt just got 2 new poodle puppys! a brother and sister. ( the boy is the black and white and is larger than his sis) they are toy pups and so darn cute! Her living room looks like a cyclone hit it but she is having a blast with these 2 new members of the family... I introduced my female min pin miney to them.. she wasn't sure what to think at first... they sure didn't look like the sleek coated puppies she had.. these were fuzzy little puff balls! but I think she is warming to them and wags her little stump of a tail and sticks her butt in the air in a play pose... but she is alot larger than they are so were taking it very slow and short meetings... Im a bit worried though about pod being close to them..( pod is mineys grown puppy) he met them briefly but he was never really around other dogs or puppies when he was little.. he was an only pup and I didnt know anyone who had small dogs I could really get him around and when he did meet a new dog he would just cry and pee all over ..lol.. so he will be a challenge. He sends conflicting signals.. he will wag his tail and look friendly then snap at other dogs..even if they are the neighbors female rotty! who he also chases down the drive if she gets out of the shock fence they have and comes over here. so he will be the last one to be around them.. I want them to be a bit larger for one.. that and read up more on how to handle this... so enjoy the new puppy pics.. they were taken on the 3rd day she had them here. hey are so darn cute and playful! if oyu ever need to smile or feeling down.. just go find a puppy!
